Bayan
Bayan is the first piece of furniture imagined by Paelis and the atelier’s first original creation. At that time, Manon Bouvier-Toth was still working alone. From the outset, the choice was made to work on a piece of furniture, driven by a clear desire to place the atelier’s craft at an ambitious and fully decorative scale.

Straw, lacquer, mirror
A founding piece designed to leave a lasting impression
Once an abandoned piece of furniture, Bayan was restored, rethought and transformed into a statement work. With this creation, Paelis laid the foundations of its language by turning straw marquetry into a field of expression for light, colour and depth. The choice of blue straw emerged as a strong decision, selected for its visual power and its ability to leave a lasting impression.
Light, lacquer and mirror extend its sense of depth
To extend this exploration, the atelier worked alongside a lacquer specialist and a mirror maker to shape the interior of the piece. The reflections of the straw, enriched by lacquered and mirrored surfaces, create a singular visual depth that feels dense and enveloping. Shown on many occasions, Bayan became a founding work in the history of the atelier and played a major role in revealing the craftsmanship, identity and world of Paelis in France and abroad.
